Xp11.20 Final posted yesterday, and this is the official debut of Sydney, Australia as part of the sim. Also, some surprising new freeware files posted today as well. so let’s jump right in:
With Xp11.20 comes the addition of some dramatic Sydney harbor landmarks, including the iconic Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge / Dawes Point area. The included YSSY gateway airport is more plausible than ever, too.
What got me, however, was flying over the area at night, and most especially making the approach to YSSY – again, at night. You’ll most likely not be able to pick up most of the color in the images below, and simply because WordPress images are at 72dpi and such low res just can’t compete with a 5k monitor. All settings at MAX here, including Reflections, and that was vital to these results.
Just ahead of the SSG 748 in the next image (just below), you may be able to see a faint glow just to the right of both runways (rwys 16 l & r), so yes, even from this distance peripheral runway lighting was bouncing off the water, and it was as startling as it was gorgeous. The approach images that follow show the reflections to better effect, but even so the intensity of the onscreen image was almost startling. I don’t know if there’ve been tweaks in Xp’s rendering engine, but the overall effect from the cockpit was just about awe inspiring.
All of the above were imaged at Laminar’s new “gateway” Sydney City scenery & YSSY airport, but you should be aware that other options exist for this airport – freeware options, and very good ones at that. Under development for years (we looked at their very first efforts almost ten years ago – and, when asked to do so, tried to make a few suggestions), Chris K and the ISDG made a remarkable freeware YSSY that, though dated, remains at the top of most users lists (including ours). The truth is, back in late v9 this was one of the very best files we had. Today it may feel a little dated, but the file’s strong points outweigh the few remaining niggles. Take a look:
I guess the one thing that hits me about this work is the absolute immersive quality of the ground textures, both the grass features on the ortho and the weathered ramps, taxiways, and runways, but look this one over closely and see if you don’t agree. Keep in mind, the file was last tweaked in 2015 so a few Xp11 features hadn’t even hit the market yet.
You can get the ISDG YSSY here: https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/20882-yssy-sydney-kingsford-smith-intl-isdg/
We also recommend you take a look at this groups’ YMML Melbourne: https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/24981-ymml-melbourne-isdg/
This award winning file was updated last summer, and has a few Xp11 compliant features onboard. Same great ground textures, too.
KFSD was just revised, quite a bit of new detail onboard, too: https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/44532-kfsd-joe-foss-field-sioux-falls-regional/
Probably the last file you’d expect to post on the day Trump pulled out of the so-called Iran nuclear deal, nevertheless, here it is, a decent FsX conversion that has loads of detail, including an accurate main terminal building and a few prominent city landmarks.
Whatever your political leanings, it’s nice to have this in Xp, and you can pick up the file here: https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/44584-oiii-tehran-mehrabad-international/
The Scilly Isles are an anomaly. Smallish islands well off the coast of Cornwall, this area is right in the middle of the Gulf Stream and the weather on the islands is reputed to be almost tropical – at least when compared to weather on the continent and the rest of the UK. The little commercial airport out here has two STOL runways (1700 and 2200 FEET), so don’t bother using an E-jet or 733 unless you like swimming from a sinking jetliner. This is Twin Otter country, of try the Ev-55 Outback or Thranda Kodiak. The Outback used half the available runway…!
The effort is quite nice, with custom buildings the rule. Pick up the file here: https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/44591-eghe-st-marys-scilly-isles-10zip/
Constantly revised and added to, this KPHL airport and city file is getting good. Real good. Even the airport looks vastly improved, though a few tweaks remain.
Such as the brownstones sticking out of the church, above, suggesting even more exclusion zones are needed. Get the file here: https://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/38420-kphl-philadelphia-international-airport-and-city/
